Teeth Whitening
In-clinic or take-home whitening, with your teeth and gums checked before you start
In-clinic whitening is done together with a scaling in the same visit, and you take home a whitening kit to continue with. The take-home option includes custom upper and lower trays with gel.
Before whitening, your dentist checks for decay, gum inflammation or tartar that needs treating first, because whitening over an untreated problem works poorly and can increase sensitivity.
How much the shade changes depends on your starting colour and on why the teeth discoloured. Staining from medication or from inside the tooth may not respond, and your dentist tells you at the examination.

Common questions
Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?
Some people feel sensitivity for a day or two which then settles. Tell your dentist if it is strong and the gel strength or timing can be adjusted.
In-clinic or take-home?
In-clinic works faster because the gel is stronger and a dentist applies it. Take-home takes longer but you control the pace. Your dentist advises based on your teeth.
How long does it last?
It depends on habits. Coffee, tea and smoking bring the colour back sooner. A take-home kit can be used to top up.
