Root Canal Treatment
Treatment for inflamed or infected tooth pulp
When decay reaches the pulp or a crack lets infection into the root, root canal treatment removes the infected tissue, cleans the canals and seals them so the tooth can stay instead of being pulled.
Most cases take two to four visits and can be paid in stages. Front teeth have fewer canals than molars, so they take less time and cost less.
If the pain is severe, an emergency visit removes the infected pulp first to stop the pain, and the rest of the treatment is scheduled afterwards.
Common questions
Does root canal treatment hurt?
It is done under local anaesthetic. Afterwards the tooth may feel tender when chewing for a few days, which pain relief controls.
How many visits does it take?
Usually two to four, depending on the number of canals and the infection. Your dentist estimates this at the first visit.
Do I need a crown afterwards?
A treated tooth is more brittle, so molars that take chewing force are usually crowned. That cost is quoted before you begin.
